In the fall of 2007, three projects were begun to improve facilities on campus for all of UAB's intercollegiate sports teams and student-athletes. These three areas are critical to the overall well-being of the student-athletes and include a new weight room, a new athletic training facility and renovations to the Athletic Academic Center.
These projects have commenced as part of an overall facility improvement plan for UAB Athletics. The weight room and training room projects are a renovation of the existing structures of Bell Gym (for the weight room) and portions of the George C. Wallace Physical Education Facility (for the athletic training room). The weight room project was completed in January of 2008, and the athletic training room project is currently underway and is expected to be completed in June of 2008.
The Athletic Academic Center, which moved from the 1055 Building to the Bell Building in 2004, is seeing major renovations done to the facility. These upgrades and renovations have been made possible by a generous donation from Don and Marsha Hire. The work is also expected to be completed in June of 2008, and the center will be named the Don M. and Marsha Hoke Hire Student-Athlete Academic Center.
