UAB FACILITIES INITIATIVE - Training Room
Work began in the middle of November 2007 to convert much of the space between the Bell and Wallace gyms in the George C. Wallace Physical Education Facility to a new athletic training facility for all of UAB's sports and student-athletes.
The project includes a significant amount of demolition with the locker rooms, offices, storage areas and gymnastics rooms being removed.
The new facility will provide more than four times the space that is currently available for the two training rooms located in Bartow Arena. The usable area will increase from 1,231 square feet to more than 7,500 square feet.
Among the details of the project are the following:
- A treatment area with 16 examination tables
- A rehabilitation area with cardio and other equipment
- A hydrotherapy area with two large whirlpools
- A taping area for football and other outdoor sports
- Indoor and outdoor storage
- Private offices for all full-time sports medicine staff
One of the current training rooms in Bartow Arena will be kept for use during practices and games for men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball.
The athletic training facility is expected to be completed and ready for use in June 2008.
