ATHENS, Greece - Former UAB synchronized swimmer Luna Aguilu has qualified to compete in the 2004 Olympic games to be held Aug. 13-29 in Athens, Greece. Aguilu and her partner Leilani Torres will compete in the duet event for the Puerto Rican National Team in the synchronized swimming competition.

Aguilu and Torres scored an 81.083 in the duet event at the Synchronized Swimming Olympic Qualification Tournament, held April 15-18 in Athens, Greece.

Aguilu, a native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, was a four-year letterwinner on the UAB synchronized swimming team. She was a part of 16 meet victories, nine first-place team routine finishes and seven first-place trio routine finishes while at UAB. Aguilu was also part of back-to-back third-place finishes for the Blazers at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in 2002 and 2003.

Aguilu is the second swimmer from the UAB program to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games. Former synchronized swimmer Bogdana Zareva also qualified to compete in the duet event for the Bulgarian National Team in the synchronized swimming competition.

Zareva and her partner Assia Anastassova scored an 83.833 in the duet event at the Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Zareva and Aguilu were both members of the inaugural synchronized swimming team at UAB during the 1999-00 season. The duo swam at UAB from 1999-03.
