Jan. 30, 2004
BOONE, N.C. --- The UAB track and field team had another strong first day in competition, as the Blazers won the distance medley relay here today in the first day of the Appalachian State Invitational. UAB won the distance medley relay for the third-consecutive week, as Petra Ivanova, Elace Minnifield, Genoah Collins and Elizabeth Ambrus finished the event in 12:35.80. The Blazers' second relay team placed fourth in the event with a time of 13:07.31. "Winning the distance medley relay for the third-straight week is a big accomplishment," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "I am impressed with our team, especially since we have three freshmen running in the event." Theresa Smith took the 55-meter hurdle title with the second-fastest time of her career. Smith, who is coming off a foot injury, recorded a time of 8.09. "Theresa has done so well already this season," said Stanfield. "Coming off of a foot injury is very difficult, but she has been working really hard and it is starting to pay off." In the triple jump, Penny Shields tallied a distance of 37-3, while Erin Harris jumped a 36-8.5.
Competition continues on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
