Feb. 3, 2002
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Judy Shepherd and the women's 4x400-meter relay team made their marks on the UAB record book this weekend at the indoor Indiana Relays. Shepherd (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) jumped 38'07.00" in the triple jump, the third best length in school history. Her jump was just shy of the records held by former UAB tracksters Kim White (41'2.5" - 1998) and All-American and assistant track coach Vonetta Flowers (39'9.75" - 1995). Shepherd claimed seventh place at the meet with her jump. The four-woman 4x400 Blazer team also had a third best finish in the UAB record books, finishing the event in a time of 3:59.10. The team placed 10th in the meet. The Blazers also shined in other events this weekend, with two freshman marking personal bests. Freshman hurdler Theresa Smith (Montgomery, Ala.) finished fifth in the 60-meter hurdle trials with a personal best time of 8.94. In the finals, she finished fourth with a 8.98 mark. Freshman sprinter Doella Miller (Batesville, Miss.) marked personal best times in the 200-meter dash (26.13, 16th) and the 400-meter dash (58.89, 15th).
