UAB Track And Field Completes Florida Relays With Historical Day

GAINESVILLE, Fla. ----- The UAB track and field team had a historical day in the final day of competition at the Florida Relays here on Saturday, as the Blazers broke three school records, bringing their tally to four on the weekend. "This was a great meet for us," said UAB head coach Ray Stanfield. "We were successful against quality competition and had many outstanding performances. This is the best outdoor meet we've had during my tenure at UAB. To break so many school records in one weekend is quite an accomplishment." The Blazers took the title in the 4x400-meter relay, in addtion to breaking a school record. Normanie McKenzie, Amanda Hart, Crystal Hunter and Elace Minnifield recorded a time of 3:45.45. In 2003, UAB had set a record in the event with a time of 3:46.42. UAB's Elizabeth Ambrus, Minnifield, Genoah Collins and Petra Ivanova broke the school record in the distance medley relay with a time of 11:49.96, good enough for third place. The Blazers' knocked more than five seconds off the previous record of 11:55.60, which was set in 1999. The Blazers' sprint medley relay team set another school record with a time of 3:57.05. Hunter, Oriana Carter, Minnifield and Collins shattered the previous mark of 4:02.31, set in 2000.
In the shuttle hurdle relay, UAB's team of Judy Shepherd, Erin Harris, Smith and LaDedria Taylor recorded a time of 58.25, breaking the school record.
Two Blazer teams placed in the 4x1500-meter relay. UAB "A" finished in second-place with a time of 19:20.40, while UAB "B" placed fifth overall and tallied a time of 21:04.98. UAB finished in eighth-place in the 4x100-meter relay, as Smith, Stephanie McCauley, Hunter and Carter posted a time of 46.21. In the 4x800-meter relay, the Blazers' team of Mary Kim Webb, Tori Stanfield, Adie Sander and Adel Anderson placed sixth overall with a time of 9:32.72. In the 100-meter hurdles, Smith finished in 10th with a time of 13.99, while Shepherd placed 32nd with a time of 14.87. In the triple jump, Penny Shields placed 12th overall with a jump of 11.61 meters, while Harris finished in 15th in the event with a distance of 11.32 meters. Adrienne Duke tied for 13th overall in the high jump, posting a height of 1.63 meters. UAB finished in 15th in the 4x200-meter relay. McKenzie, Shauntae Lockett, Duke and McCauley registered a time of 1:40.86. Carter and McCauley both placed in the 100-meters. Carter finished the event in 12.28, placing 24th overall and McCauley recorded a time of 12.35 for 31st-place. The Blazers return to Alabama to compete in the Coach O Invitational on Saturday, April 3 in Troy, Ala. |
