UAB Track and Field Has Impressive Showing At Ole Miss Open

OXFORD, Miss. - Battling through rain soaked conditions, the UAB track team performed well here Saturday at the Ole Miss Open. The majority of the field events were cancelled due to the weather, along with the sprint hurdles. Leading the way for the Lady Blazers on the afternoon was Stephanie McCauley and Normanie McKenzie who each won their flights in their respective events. McCauley won the section three flight in the 100-meter dash, taking it in a time of 11.97. However, it was Oriana Carter who had the best time in the event with an 11.73. Crystal Hunter recorded a time of 11.95, while Theresa Smith (12.41) and Shauntee Lockett (12.59) also ran the event for the Lady Blazers. McCauley also had the third-best time overall in the 200 meters. She ran the event in a time of 24.76 and was one of only three competitors to break the 25-second mark in the event. McKenzie took the section three flight in the 400-meter dash, recording a time of 58.21. UAB's Elace Minniefield recorded the best time of the Lady Blazers with a time of 57.03. Emry McKay also performed well, finishing second overall in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:39.80. Elizabeth Ambrus also competed in the same event, and recorded a time of 4:54.63. The UAB 4x100 meter relay team finished third overall with a time of 46.38.
UAB will take next weekend off in preparation for the 2004 Conference USA Championships held in Louisville, Ky., April 13-15
