CARBONDALE, Ill. ----- UAB's Penny Shields took third place and was one of three Lady Blazers to place in the triple jump here on the first day of competition at the Saluki Booster Club Track and Field Invitational.

Shields, a highly-touted freshman from Denver, Colo., finished third with a leap of 11.78 meters but she was second among collegiate competitors. Betty-Ann Haywood, competing unattached, won the event at 12.17 while SIU's Turevsky was second at 11.99 meters.

UAB also got a seventh place performance (11.17m) from junior Judy Shepherd and an 11th place effort from another freshman, Tiffany Parker, of Cullman, Ala.

After a limited schedule that included just five men's and women's events Friday, the meet will conclude Saturday with a full slate of events at the SIU Student Recreation Center.
