CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The UAB track team had an impressive showing in its second meet of the season here Saturday at the Saluki Invitational. The Blazers finished the competition in fourth place in the team standings with several team members establishing new personal best performances.

Theresa Smith finished first in the women's 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.09, setting a new career record. Smith took third place in the long jump with a leap of 17-9 1/2. Smith ended the competition scoring 30 points of the team's combined score of 63.

Teammate Dina Katsoulis broke the school record for indoor shot put with a throw of 35-2. Judy Shepard took a fourth place finish in the women's 55-meter hurdles finishing with a time of 8.63, a new personal best. Shepard also finished in second place in the triple jump with a distance of 37-7 3/4. Teammate Amanda Kara finished in third place in the 3000-meter run with a personal-best effort.

UAB head coach Ray Stanfield was impressed with the team's finish. "There were several outstanding performances from several girls," said Stanfield. "With 14 girls to be able to score 63 points and take a fourth place finish in the meet is impressive. We faced several quality teams and we showed we could compete. Theresa Smith is moving closer to qualifying for the NCAAs in the 55 meter hurdles."
