Blazers Claim 3-2, 13-Inning Victory Over Birmingham-Southern
Feb. 24, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Birmingham-Southern's John King walked catcher Eugene Rodriguez with the bases loaded, allowing UAB's Nathan McCorkle to score the go-ahead run and lift the Blazers to a 3-2 13-inning victory over the Panthers in baseball action Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field. UAB (5-0) extended its winning streak to eight games, dating back to last season. The victory also marked the 700th for the Blazer Baseball program. First baseman Daniel Hill tripled to center field to lead off the bottom of the 13th. The Panthers intentionally walked the next two Blazer batters and got one out before giving up the walk. UAB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when right fielder Cole Helms singled to center field, scoring second baseman Josh Miljavac. Birmingham-Southern (0-4) tied the score in the top fourth inning when catcher Ryan Griffith grounded out to second base, allowing first baseman Connor Robertson to score from third base. The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning when right fielder Michael Cline singled up the middle, scoring shortstop Matt Barber. UAB tied the score in the bottom of the ninth when Miljavac singled to right field, scoring pinch runner Levi Patmon.
Eric Roberts (1-0) picked up the win for UAB after working the final two innings. He allowed no runs on no hits, no walks and recorded one strikeout. Blazer starter Adam Price threw six innings and gave up two runs, none of which were earned, on four hits, he walked two and struck out three. Lyle Northington worked five solid innings for the Blazers after coming on in relief of Price in the top of the seventh. Northington allowed no runs on three hits, walked three and struck out four.
"It was a good win," said UAB head coach Larry Giangrosso. "I thought both teams got after it really well. It was a hard game to play and a hard game to coach. They had runners in scoring position a lot and so did we. I thought their pitching staff threw great and ours did too. Both teams really got after it tonight." King (0-1) took the loss after pitching one and one-third innings and allowing one run on one hit. He walked three and struck out one. Panther starter Mac Godwin worked five and one-third innings and gave up one run on two hits, walked five and struck out four. The Blazers have now won eight in a row at home, dating back to last season. UAB is back at home to Young Memorial Field to host Marshall in a three-game series Friday-Sunday. |
