UAB Pounds Out 22 Runs to Beat Alabama A&M Wednesday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB baseball team scored 22 runs on 26 hits to roll past Alabama A&M Wednesday night at Young Memorial Field, 22-4. Junior designated hitter Billy Lichtner was 5-for-6 with four RBI in the game, while senior outfielder J.R. Bond was 3-for-3 with four RBI, a home run and a double. UAB improves to 11-11 on the year, while Alabama A&M is now 8-13.

Senior outfielder Steven Turner hit his second home run of the season on Wednesday to highlight his 3-for-6, three RBI performance, while sophomore outfielder Brint Hardy continued his hot streak, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored.

Junior right-hander Jimbo Crew earned the win on the mound for the Blazers after throwing four effective innings in which he struck out two and allowed three earned runs. In all, UAB used seven pitchers in the contest.

Other notable performances at the plate for UAB came from senior third baseman Ryne Lovdahl, who was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs scored, and sophomore shortstop Brett Hall was 2-for-2 with two RBI.

Alabama A&M's Myron Clark was tabbed with the loss after pitching 2.0 innings in which he threw 95 pitches and allowed 14 runs.

The Bulldogs made things interesting early when infielder Jason Harrison hit a two-run home run to right field to take a 2-0 lead in the first, however UAB came up in the bottom half and scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead that it would not surrender.

Turner jump started the team's first inning surge by leading off with a home run to right field.

The Blazers will be off on Thursday but will return to Young Memorial Field on Friday when they begin a three game series with UNC Asheville at 7 p.m.
