Baseball Opens Homestand With 5-1 Win Over Jacksonville State Tuesday
March 27, 2001 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mark Garner and Christian Reimers each drove in a pair of runs to lead UAB to a 5-1 baseball victory over Jacksonville State here Tuesday night at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers (15-10) snapped a season-high four-game losing streak with the victory, while the Gamecocks fell to 9-17. Down 1-0, UAB got the lead for good with a pair of runs. With one out and a runner at first, Matt Gaulden singled to right and the throw in from the rightfielder Ben Padilla went wide of third that allowed Brandon Isbell to score. Gaulden scored one batter later on a groundout by Garner. Reimers extended the lead to 3-1 in the fifth with a run-scoring single. The Blazers closed out the scoring with a two runs in the eighth. Garner pushed home a run with a sacrifice fly and then Reimers notched another RBI single to complete the UAB scoring. Five UAB pitchers scatter 10 hits and recorded 10 strikeouts on the evening. Blazer starter Scott Gibson (2-2) allowed a run on three hits and fanned three to get the victory over two innings of work. JSU freshman Jesse Corn (1-2) tossed five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and whiffed three in the loss for the Gamecocks.
UAB returns to action Friday when they play the first game of a three-game Conference USA set against Charlotte. Game time for the opener is 7 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
