UAB Football Post-Game Notes

(Nippert Stadium * Cincinnnati, Ohio)

  • UAB (6-3, 2-3 C-USA) saw its three-game win streak snapped...Cincinnati avenged last season's 24-21 overtime loss to the Blazers at Nippert Stadium (Oct. 16, 1999).

  • UC quarterback Deontey Kenner's 351 passing yards was the most allowed by UAB this season and the most by a Blazer opponent since Tulane's Patrick Ramsey threw for 325 yards on Nov. 20, 1999.

  • The 33 points scored by Cincinnati was the second most allowed by the Blazers this season, Louisville scored 38 in its win over the Blazers at Legion Field on Oct. 7.

  • UAB quarterback Jeff Aaron committed his first turnover in four games (13 quarters) as a starter...Aaron's fumbled pitchout in the first quarter (intended for Percy Coleman) gave Cincinnati a first down at UAB's 11 yardline (the Bearcats subsequently scored on a field goal)...threw his first interception(s) as a Blazer with two in the second quarter.

  • UAB trailed 20-0 at the half....it was the first time in 25 games, dating back to the Virginia Tech game in 1998 (Virginia Tech 41, UAB 0) that the Blazers were shut out in the first half.

  • Defensive end Otis Leverette left the game late in the second quarter with a concussion and did not return.

  • Linebacker Adrian Abrams made his third interception of the season late in the second half...that ties him with safety Adrian Singleton for the team lead.
  • The UAB defense scored its first points of the 2000 season on the first play from scrimmage of the second half as safety Avery Warner picked up a fumble by UC's Ray Jackson and returned it for a two-yard touchdown (it was Warner's first career TD).

  • The UAB offense perked up late in the third quarter with an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by Aaron's first touchdown as a Blazer, a two-yard rush....the drive was sparked by Jegil Dugger's 52 rushing yards on five carries.

  • UAB is now 0-2 on artificial turf this season, with losses at Kansas (Sep.16) and Cincinnati (Nov. 4).

  • Kenny Borders recorded his first touchdown reception of his career, when he caught a nine-yard pass from Jeff Aaron with 13 seconds remaining in the contest.

  • The Blazers lost the opening coin toss for the eighth time in nine tries this season.
