BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Blazer football player Richard Carter has been honored as the UAB Scholar-Athlete of the week. In addition to his play on the field, the fifth-year senior defensive end has been highly successful academically.

Carter has played in all but four games for the Blazers over the past three seasons. In 2008, he has seen action in every game and started four contests, posting eight tackles, including one tackle for loss.

Carter is coming off his best performance of the season, having tallied a career-high five tackles last Thursday against Memphis.

In the classroom, Carter has earned high marks, as well. Since coming to UAB in 2004, he has been named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll every year.

Carter and the Blazers are back in action with another Thursday night contest this week. UAB travels to Houston for a 7 p.m. CT contest Thursday against the Cougars.

The game will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network. It can be heard locally on WWMM 100.5 FM radio in Birmingham. The contest will also be televised on CBS College Sports.
