Men's Golf Tied For 12th After Day One Of Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. - The No. 24 UAB men's golf team recorded a score of 299 to sit in a four-way tie for 12th place after the first round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Friday. "I thought we played well today," said UAB head coach Alan Kaufman. "This is a good course and there is a lot of tough competition here. We have to continue to improve during the next two rounds." Senior Zach Sucher is leading the Blazers' efforts with a two-under 70 to tie for sixth place in the individual standings, which is just two strokes behind the leader. Junior Adam West is tied for the 36th spot after shooting a three-over 75. Sophomore Blake Watts is just one stroke back of that at 76, which puts him in a tie for 50th place. Junior Blake West carded a 78 to tied for 75th place and junior Cathal O'Malley is in the 88th position with a score of 81. East Tennessee State is leading the 18-team tournament with a one-under 287 after 18 holes of play. Conference USA foe UCF is second at 289 and Ole Miss rounds out the top three with a score of 290. UAB is tied with Georgia, Mississippi State and Georgia Tech for the 12th spot and is 10 strokes out of first place. In the individual race, UCF's Blayne Barber is pacing the field after shooting a four-under par 68 in round one. UAB will play the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Saturday at The Farm Golf Club. The third and final round is slated for Sunday.
