Sapp Named C-USA Men's Golfer of the Week
Oct. 10, 2007
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB senior Kyle Sapp was named Conference USA men's Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday afternoon. Sapp led the Blazers to a second-placed finish at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate held on Oct. 9-10. Sapp, native of Gardendale, Ala., shot a career-low mark of eight-under par 205 for the 54-hole event, which is one of the most high-profile events of the fall season. He also set career marks for 18 holes (65), 36 holes (135), 54 holes and tournament finish. Sapp becomes the second UAB golfer to claim the award this season, as junior Brad Smith was tabbed the Golfer of the Week following his second-place finish at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Sept. 24-25. The No. 17-ranked Blazers set several new teams records at the event demolishing the school's 18-hole (262) record by 11 strokes and the 36-hole (545) mark by 15 strokes. UAB also set a new mark for a 54-hole event, closing play with a 25-under par 287 (283-262-282), 13 strokes better than the previous record. With the result, UAB improved to 36-3 on the fall 2007 campaign, including an impressive 9-2 record against top-25 teams. This week's finish also marked the third consecutive tournament the Blazers have finished second in this season. Sapp and the Blazers will next be in action on Oct. 12-14 when they compete at the Ridges Collegiate Invitational.
