Men's Soccer Falls In Final Minute At Charlotte

Sept. 21, 2008

Final Stats

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UAB men's soccer team allowed a Charlotte goal with 51 seconds remaining in the contest to give the 49ers a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon. With the win, the 49ers captured the Nike Classic championship, while the Blazers finish third in the event.

The game was scoreless until the 89:09 mark. With the match looking like it was going into overtime, Charlotte's Andres Cuero caught a centering pass off the foot Adam Gross and beat UAB goalkeeper Wes Johnson to the left side of the net.

The Blazers played well throughout the contest, especially in the opening 45 minutes, but failed to connect on their chances. UAB ousthot Charlotte, 13-9, in the match, including an 8-3 advantage in the first half. Johnson made a season-best six saves in the losing effort.

UAB's Two-Boys Gumede and Shane Elsner were selected to the All-Tournament team.

All four of UAB's losses this season have now come by one goal, with two of the defeats coming in the final seven minutes of the game (UAB lost on a goal in the 83rd minute to then-No. 14 UIC on Sept. 5).

The Blazers will next be in action when they open the Conference USA slate at Memphis on Saturday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m. CT.
