UAB Men's Soccer Team Blanks C-USA Rival Cincinnati, 1-0, To Stay Undefeated In Conference Play

Oct. 3, 2004

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team won its fifth-straight game and improved to a perfect 3-0 in conference play as the Blazers shutout Cincinnati, 1-0, at West Campus Field.

The Blazers (6-3-0, 3-0 C-USA) won its second-consecutive 1-0 game and shutout their fifth opponent this season. UAB has outscored the opposition 13-1 during its current five-game winning streak. The Blazers moved to the top of Conference USA with Saturday's win. South Florida (2-0-1) plays at Florida Atlantic on Sunday in a non-conference match. The Bulls entered the week just ahead of UAB in the conference standings.

Sophomore forward Jerson Monteiro scored UAB's lone goal, his fifth of the season, at the 52:08 mark to give the Blazers the 1-0 lead, one that would stand the entire game. UAB's defense was once again stellar, as the Blazers have allowed just one goal since the middle of last month, and have been touched for only seven all season.

UAB recorded 12 shots, seven on goal, and held the Bearcats (2-7-0, 1-2-0 C-USA) to only two shots on goal. Cincinnati had only nine total shots in the game. The Blazers upped their all-time mark versus the Bearcats to 8-5-2 and shutout Cincinnati for the second-straight season.

"Our backs on defense were just rock solid tonight and that is the way that our defense has been lately," said UAB head coach Mike Getman. "We allowed only two shots on goal tonight and the whole team stayed focused tonight."

"We had a lot going on tonight here with the UAB-Cincinnati football game for the fans, which was a real nice idea I thought, but sometimes we would hear cheering and not know if it was for us, which was different," said Getman. "Our guys, though, stayed focused and did what they needed to do to get a big conference win."

The Blazers, the 1999 C-USA regular-season and tournament champions, are off their best start in conference play since opening 4-0 in 2001.

UAB will next face Saint Louis on Oct. 9 in St. Louis, Mo., at 7 p.m. The Blazers then return home to play three-straight home games.
