RAYO SCORES TWO GOALS IN MEN'S SOCCER 3-1 WIN OVER GEORGIA STATE

Oct. 29, 2000

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Jose Rayo scored two goals before leaving the game with an injury and Flavio Monteiro returned to add a goal as UAB defeated Georgia State in non-conference soccer action Sunday afternoon at UAB's West Campus Field.

It was the eighth straight match without a defeat for the Blazers, who are now 11-3-2 overall. Georgia State fell to 10-8.

Georgia State took a 1-0 lead at the 32:48 mark on a goal by Terrance Johnson. Rayo answered off a rebound at the 40:37 mark. Rayo scored in the 62nd minute on a header off a throw-in from Mike Garcia.

Monteiro scored for his eighth straight match on a penalty kick at 76:48. Monteiro has missed most of the season with an injury. "We've played well without Flavio, but now that we have him back, we should be even better," Blazer head coach Mike Getman said.

Rayo left the game after being injured on a battle for the ball with Georgia State's Scott Mora, who had an assist on the Panther's first goal. Neither re-entered the game.

It was the final home match of the season for the Blazers. They play at Alabama A&M Wednesday and at Louisville next Sunday, to finish the regular season.
