NUMBER 10 UAB MEN'S SOCCER WINS IN OVERTIME AGAIN, 3-2 OVER ALABAMA A&M
Nov. 1, 2000 Juan Carlos Deras scored his second penalty kick goal of the game in the 107th minute to lift UAB to a 3-2 double-overtime win over Alabama A&M and extend the Blazers unbeaten streak to nine games the A&M soccer field in Huntsville. The number-10 ranked Blazers are now 12-3-2 overall with one match remaining in the regular season. They play at Louisville, Sunday afternoon. This was the fifth straight road match which has gone into overtime for UAB. The Blazers have won all five. UAB has played eight overtime matches this season, and are 5-1-2 in extra period games. The penalty kick was set up when Lane Knight drove through the A&M defense and was fouled inside the penalty area. Deras drilled the kick into the right side of the goal. Deras scored the game-tying goal at the 71:58 mark when an A&M player was called for a hand-ball violation inside the goal area. UAB took the early lead when Knight scored from in front of the goal on an assist by Nelson Mata at the 39:22 mark. The lead did not last long as the Bulldogs' Allan Kazooka scored just 24 seconds later. A&M took a 2-1 lead into the half when Musa Manneh scored at the 42:29 mark, less than three minutes after Kazooka's goal. UAB had its chances to put the game away in the first overtime. The Blazers attempted four shots in the first extra period. Three shots hit the crossbar and one bounced off a UAB player. The Bulldogs did not get off a shot attempt in either extra period. Knight and Deras both have scored four goals on the season for the Blazers.
UAB still has a chance at the Conference-USA title with a win at Louisville, Sunday. Should Saint Louis lose at South Florida, Friday night, the Blazers would win the league regular season title and host the C-USA Championships. The tournament begins next Thursday at the sight of the regular season winner.
