UAB Advances to C-USA Men's Soccer Finals with win over 2-0 win over Louisville

Nov. 10, 2000

ST. LOUIS, Missouri - Sophomore midfielder Jermie Frankson came off the bench to score the game-winning goal and add an assists lead 13th-ranked UAB to a 2-0 win over Louisville in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournamenta at the Robert Herman Stadium in Saint Louis, Friday night.

The Blazers (14-3-2) advance to Sunday afternoon's championship match against the winner of the late match between Memphis and the host and top seed Saint Louis. UAB carries an 11-match unbeaten streak into the championship match.

Frankson entered the game at the 35:57 mark and scored just 17 seconds later on a pass from Roberto Najarro that gave the Blazers a 1-0 halftime lead. Frankson later set up Lane Knight for a goal on a reverse no-look pass after taking a pass from Jose Rayo.

It was the sixth goal of the season for Knight, giving him the team lead in that category. He has scored four goals in the last three matches.

UAB goalkeeper David Clemente recorded his fourth solo shutout of the year. It was the 17th of his career. He lowered his goals against average to 0.98 for the season, the lowest in school history.

"It wasn't really a surprise that Frankson came right in and scored. He's been tremendous for us all year," said Blazer head coach Mike Getman. "We have 22 players that can all play and we have 17 players that have scored goals for us. Our strength all season has been our depth."

It was the second win over Louisville in five days for the UAB. The Blazers closed out its regular season with a 3-2 overtime win at Louisville, Nov. 5.

UAB has gone 10-0-1 over its last 11 matches. The last lost was to Saint Louis 1-0 back on Sept. 30.

Sunday's match will be played at 2 p.m. The winner receives and automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
