Dejan Jakovic Makes Debut With Canadian National Team

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB forward Dejan Jakovic can now add international playing experience to his already impressive resume. Jakovic earned his first career cap when Canada's men's national team defeated Martinique, 1-0, on Jan. 30 in its first international game of the 2008 season. Jakovic entered the contest in the 80th minute and helped preserve the 1-0 victory. He was among six players to have earned their first senior cap with the Canadian team. The Canadian team is currently assessing talent for Canada's upcoming run to the FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. While CONCACAF's first phase of 2010 World Cup Qualification begins in February, Canada will wait until the second phase to play their first game on June 15 in Saint Vincent & the Grenadines. The Canadian squad has been training together in Florida since 20 January and arrived in Fort-au-France, Martinique by boat on Monday. The Wednesday night match was played at the Stade Louis-Achille. They fly to St. Lucia on Thursday for a day of training before heading back to Florida to complete their camp.
