Wes Johnson, Frank Brown Sweep Conference USA Player of the Week Awards

Sept. 17, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB forward Frank Brown and goalkeeper Wes Johnson were tabbed the Conference USA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, league officials announced on Monday.

Johnson's second consecutive Defensive Player of the Week award marks the first time in school history the same UAB player has won back-to-back awards, while it is the first time since Nov. 3, 2004 that UAB has swept the weekly honor.

Additionally, Brown was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. With the nod, he is the first Blazer to earn the accolade since Jerson Monteiro earned a spot on the national team for the week of Oct. 16, 2006.

"Frank and Wes both played terrific over the weekend," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "Frank is our leading scorer and has had an outstanding start to the season. Wes just continues to get better and better. We have outscored our last four opponents by a score of 11-0 and a lot of that is attributed to the play of these two young men. I am very happy they received the proper recognition."

Brown had an outstanding week in leading the Blazers to the 2007 UAB Classic championship. Brown scored two game-winning goals in two games, en route to earning the Most Valuable Player of the tournament accolades. Against Birmingham-Southern, the Preston, England native scored the game's first goal en route to a 3-0 victory against the Blazers' crosstown rival.

In the championship game against Mercer, Brown scored the game-winning goal 4:22 into the first overtime, to record the Blazers' first UAB Classic championship since 2004. He has now scored a goal in each of the Blazers' last three contests. He currently leads UAB with four goals and 10 points on the season.

Johnson, who captured last week's C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, had another outstanding performance in the net for UAB, helping the Blazers to the UAB Classic title. Johnson recorded back-to-back shutouts against Birmingham-Southern (3-0), followed by a 1-0 overtime win over Mercer.

Johnson, who earned a spot on the UAB Classic All-Tournament team for his efforts, has recorded three straight shutouts and ran his consecutive minutes streak of not allowing a goal to 373 minutes - a span of four games.

The duo will lead the Blazers in two important games over the weekend. UAB will first travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take on the nationally-ranked Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m. CT. The Blazers will then return home to do battle with the Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. at West Campus Field.
