Men's Soccer Team Opens 2007 Conference USA Play Saturday Against South Carolina

Sept. 28, 2007

South Carolina Game Notes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's soccer team will open the 2007 Conference USA season when it hosts the South Carolina Gamecocks on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m. at West Campus Field. The game is the league opener for both teams. In anticipation of a good home crowd, any UAB student who presents a valid student ID at the gate will receive free food and a free UAB soccer t-shirt.

"This is a very important game against a good South Carolina game," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "It is the conference home opener for us, will feature two exciting college soccer teams and should be an entertaining game. We are hoping to get a great home crowd to help support us Saturday night."

UAB (5-3) enters the contest on a hot streak as of late. With the 2-1 win at No. 10 Indiana on Sept. 21, UAB recorded its fifth consecutive victory after opening the season with back-to-back losses. The Blazers have since dropped a game (losing 1-0 to Jacksonville on Sept. 23) but have outscored the competition 13-2 during the six-game stretch (5-1).

South Carolina enters its game at UAB sporting a similar 5-3 record during the 2007 campaign. The Gamecocks have split their last six contests, and are coming off a 2-0 win over Alabama A&M on Sept. 23, and improved to a perfect 4-0 at home. However, following a 2-1 loss at No. 9 Duke, USC is 1-3 in road contests, with the lone victory coming in a double-overtime victory at then-No. 12 Clemson (1-0) on Aug. 31.

Last season, the two teams split two contests. The Blazers fell, 3-2, in Columbia, S.C. during regular season action, while UAB returned the favor in the 2006 C-USA Tournament, capturing a 3-2 victory.
