UAB Returns To League Play With Road Game At Kentucky
Oct. 5, 2007
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's soccer team returns to Conference USA play, as it travels to Lexington, Ky. to take on the Wildcats of Kentucky on Saturday night at the UK Soccer Complex. The Blazers (5-4-1, 0-1 C-USA) enter the game against the Wildcats having gone 5-2-1 over their last eight contests, including a victory at then-No. 10 Indiana (2-1) in front of nearly 3,000 fans. Most recently, UAB and Eastern Illinois finished 2-2 last Wednesday night in a battle of regionally ranked teams. Leading the way for the Blazers is MAC Hermann Trophy candidate and preseason all-conference performer Dejan Jakovic. Through 10 games on the season, Jakovic leads the team in goals (6) and points (13). Junior Frank Brown, who missed the game against EIU with an injury, is the team's second-leading scorer with four goals and 10 points (4g, 2a), while junior Derek Rios and freshman Anthony King have each tallied two goals apiece. UAB sophomore goalkeeper Wes Johnson, a two-time 2007 C-USA Defensive Player of the Week, who has allowed only nine goals in 880 minutes (0.92 GAA). Kentucky (2-5-2), will be playing its first league match when it hosts the Blazers on Saturday night. The Wildcats are coming off a dramatic 2-1 win over Western Kentucky last Friday night. The victory was the second of the season for UK and first since a 3-0 win over UNC Asheville on Sept. 2. Tim Crone leads the Wildcats with seven points on the year on three goals and an assist, while Aaron Swanson has collected two goals this season. Defensively, goalkeeper Dan Williams has played every minute in goal this season, allowing 1.55 goals per game (15 goals).
Last season, in a contest between two ranked teams, former UAB great Jerson Monteiro headed home the game-winner just two minutes into the first overtime to lift UAB to a 1-0 victory. Jakovic recorded the assist when he crossed a ball from the left side for the easy header at point-blank range. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) at the UK Soccer Complex. http://livestats.ukathletics.com/msoccer/xlive.htm |
