Men's Soccer Team Falls At Kentucky, 1-0

Oct. 6, 2007

LEXINGTON, Ky. ----- The UAB men's soccer team, playing without its top two scorers due to injury, allowed a goal to Kentucky in the 82nd minute and fell, 1-0, in Conference USA action Saturday night. The Blazers were without junior MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Dejan Jakovic and junior Frank Brown, who have combined to score 10 of the Blazers' 16 goals on the season.

"We played hard, but we have so many injuries and it is really hurting us," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "It is making it hard for us to play with consistency. I think our whole team is looking forward to a few days of rest."

The Wildcats (3-5-2, 1-0 C-USA) scored at the 81:35 mark when defender Barry Rice hit a header off the top bar off a corner kick to give UK the victory.

The loss drops UAB to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in Conference USA. It is the first time since 1992, Getman's first year at the helm of the program, the Blazers have begun league play without a win two-games into conference play.

"Kentucky is a team that is so direct and so physical, it is very hard to play against," Getman said.

For the first time this season, the Blazers will have only one game this week, when they host Florida International as part of UAB's homecoming festivities on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 2 p.m. at West Campus Field. Following the men's soccer game, the UAB football team will take on the Tulane Green Wave at 6 p.m. at Legion Field.

Any UAB student who comes to the men's soccer game and presents a valid student ID at the game will receive free food and a free UAB soccer t-shirt.
