Dean Sorrell Earns C-USA Spirit Of Service Award

Dec. 18, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB junior defender Dean Sorrell has been named as one of 12 recipients of the inaugural Conference USA Spirit of Service award, the league office announced on Thursday.

The C-USA Spirit of Service Award is designed to recognize the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant community service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport. The Spirit of Service award will be presented three times throughout the season, with today's honorees representing Conference USA's fall sports: football, soccer, volleyball and cross country.

"It is nice that Conference USA has recognized Dean for the great spirit he brings to our team," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "Along with being our team captain, he is a great leader off the field as well. He is working hard to make our team, our campus and our community a better place. I am very proud of Dean and all that he does for UAB."

Sorrell was the only player on the UAB men's soccer team to play every minute of every game this season. Additionally, the co-captain of the 2008 team has played 5,336 out of a possible 5,472 minutes during his three-year playing career, which equates to 97-percent of action.

Off the court, the Birmingham, Ala., native is equally as impressive. Sorrell is a double major in Spanish and biology and is currently pursuing a minor in both chemistry and psychology. He also volunteered time last spring to help build a playground at a local school adjacent to the UAB soccer field. Additionally, he volunteered at a local park on Martin Luther King Jr. Day to help pick up trash, sweep the walkways and clean the park. The junior defender has also volunteered at several local charities along with other UAB student-athletes through the "I Change" UAB community service project and has served supper at the Ronald McDonald House.

Sorrell was the only men's soccer player in Conference USA to earn the honor.
