UAB Men's Tennis Team Shuts Out Gonzaga, 7-0

March 13, 2008

IRVINE, Calif. ----- The UAB men's tennis team made it two wins in two days on its west coast trip as the Blazers shut out Gonzaga, 7-0, Thursday.

UAB improved its dual match record to 7-1 this spring as the Blazers posted their sixth consecutive victory. UAB won the doubles point and then took all six singles matches with five of those decided in straight sets.

The Blazers won convincingly in virtaully match. Senior Johannes Spangenberg was extended to a third set at No. 1 singles by the Bulldogs' Roman Dojcak, but other than that spot, the Blazers were dominant.

A trio of freshmen were winners in the middle positions for the Blazers. Slawomir Szeremeta was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 2 singles over Zack Radetzky while Dan Cornei kept his singles record perfect at 8-0 this spring with his 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Cooper Fratt.

At No. 4, UAB freshmen Brian Ly was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Charles Adams while sophomores Thomas Petrich and Alex Emery won in straight sets at No. 5 and 6 singles. Petrich claimed a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Napolsky at No. 5 and Emery was a 6-3, 6-3 winner at No. 6 over Casey McCoy.

"Everybody played well today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We came out pretty sharp in doubles and carried the momentum into singles. I was a little concerned we might have a letdown today after our win yesterday (over UC-Irvine).

The Blazers will play their final match of the trip Saturday when they take on Cal-Riverside.
