UAB Men's Tennis Team Cruises Past Morehead State, 7-0

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team cruised past visiting Morehead State here Saturday, 7-0, to postits ninth victory in the last 10 matches. The No. 66 Blazers (10-2) swept the three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead and then won at all six singles positions. UAB freshman Dan Cornei defeated the Eagles' Greg Johnstone, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles spot. The Blazers won in straight sets in all but one singles match at the Brook Highland Racquet Club. UAB won easily in doubles as Hans Spangenberg and Brian Ly teamed at No. 1 to down Morehead's Johnstone and Bradley Bryan, 8-4. At the No. 2 doubles position, Slawomir Szeremeta and Tyrone Ewels were 8-4 winners over the Eagles' duo of Lovell Medcalf and Doug Song. In the No. 3 match, the Blazers' Cornei and Alex Emery beat HJ Adams and Charles Williams, 8-6. The Blazers kept the momentum going in singles. Szeremeta was a 6-2, 6-4 winner at No. 2 over Dusan Milovanovic while Spangenberg defeated Song at the No. 3 position, 6-1, 6-0. UAB dropped its only set in the match at No. 4 singles as Ewels rallied to beat Morehead State's Bryan, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. At No. 5 singles, Emery defeated MSU's Williams by a 6-1, 6-3. Blazer sophomore Thomas Petrich provided UAB with its other singles win in the match, defeating Medcalf, 6-3, 6-1.
