Men's Tennis Team In Action At South Carolina Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team will be back in action this weekend when it travels to Columbia, S.C. to participate in the South Carolina Fall Invitational.

The tournament will run Friday through Sunday as more than 200 players representing 36 schools will take part in the event. The tournament will be played at four locations in Columbia -- the Gamecocks' Sam Daniel Tennis Facility, the Maxcy-Gregg Tennis Center, the Columbia Tennis Center and the USC Indoor Courts.

Six Blazers will be entered in the tournament in various divisions. Senior Hans Spangenberg will be playing in the A-1 flight and will go against Dmitry Lebedev of Arkansas in his first round match Friday. Sophomore Thomas Petrich is the No. 5 seed in the A-2 singles flight and will play Chris Peek of Charleston Southern in his opening round.

UAB has two players participating in the A/B singles flight as freshman Tyrone Ewels and sophomore Alex Emery are among the 32 players listed in the draw. Ewels will meet John Percival of South Carolina-Aiken in his first round match while Emery takes on Martin Redelinghuys of UNC-Greensboro.

Senior Adrian Tollstam and sophomore Miquel Artero are the other Blazers in the tournament and both are entered in the B-2 singles flight.

Three UAB doubles teams will be competing in the event. Spangenberg will team with fellow senior Tollstam in the A-1 doubles flight, Emery and Ewels are paired together in B-1 doubles with Artero and Petrich partnered in B-2 doubles.
