Lady Blazers Wrap-Up Home Season This Weekend
Feb. 19, 2003 BIRMINGHAM, Ala.----- The Lady Blazers are home for their two final games of the season in Bartow Arena. On Friday, February 21, at 7 p.m., UAB hosts the Pirates of East Carolina University. On Sunday, February 23, seniors K'Shaki Short and Michelle Smith will play in their final home game, as UAB faces conference-leader Charlotte at 2 p.m. UAB (8-15, 4-6) is coming off a disappointing weekend after losing two games at home. On February 14, the Lady Blazers fell to Southern Miss, 68-51. Natasha Thomas and Smith accounted for 33 of UAB's 51 points and 25 of the Lady Blazers' 36 rebounds. On February 16, UAB lost to Tulane, 78-51, as they struggled to hit from beyond the arc, making only 3-of-20 three-point shots. East Carolina fell to DePaul, 105-70, on February 16, dropping it to 10-13 overall and 2-8 in conference. The Pirates were led by Courtney Willis who scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. This past Friday, ECU was defeated by Marquette, 84-68. Tali Robich and Jennifer Jackson each had 15 points for East Carolina.
The 49ers of Charlotte split two games last weekend, falling to DePaul before defeating Marquette. On Friday, DePaul handed Charlotte its first conference loss, 83-68. Peaches Harris led the 49ers with 13 points. The 49ers struggled from three-point range, hitting 3-of-16 attempts. On Sunday, Charlotte bounced back and defeated Marquette, 70-58. Monica League scored 23 points in 29 minutes to lead the 49ers to victory. Charlotte is now 17-6 overall, 9-1 in the conference.
