Trio Of Blazers Selected To All-Conference USA Teams
March 4, 2008
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB had three players selected to the 2008 All-Conference USA women's basketball teams, announced the league office Tuesday. Senior guard/forward Diamond Rogers was honored as a member of the All-C-USA first team. Senior guard Crystal McFadden earned a spot on the third team and freshman guard Amanda Peterson was tabbed to the All-Freshman team. "It is an honor to be recognized by the people in your conference," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "Diamond, Crystal and Amanda have all had outstanding seasons and these awards are an attribute to all of their hard work and efforts throughout the year." Rogers, a second team All-C-USA pick last season, led the league in scoring most of the season and finished the regular season averaging 16.7 points per game. The Jackson, Miss. native also pulled down 8.3 rebounds per game and dished out 3.3 assists per game. Rogers, who leads the Blazers in multiple categories, has tallied more than 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during her career. "Diamond has been the backbone of our team this season," said Smith. "She leads us in so many categories and it shows her versatility on the court. She has elevated her game to such a high level and turned herself into one of the best players in the league." McFadden garnered her first career league honor by being named to the third team. The guard from New York, N.Y. is UAB's most experienced player, playing in 110 games and earning the starting nod in 100 of those contests. McFadden averaged 13.4 ppg and 5.1 rpg as a senior and 13.2 ppg and 4.9 rpg during her career. She ranks 12th on the UAB career scoring charts with 1,453 points.
"Crystal is such a hard-working and talented player," said Smith. "She helps us in so many ways and is a consistent force for us on the floor. She has never averaged less than 13 points per game during any season of her career, which shows her consistency." Peterson came on strong during her freshman season for the Blazers, emerging as UAB's top threat from beyond the arc. The Homewood, Ala. native has put up 8.6 ppg overall and 9.6 ppg in league games. Peterson is one trey shy of the UAB freshman record for three-pointers in a season (61) and ranks third in C-USA in three-point baskets made (2.07 pg). She has 17 double-digit scoring games, including a streak of 13 consecutive games scoring in double figures during mid-season. "Amanda has really stepped up and made major contributions to this team as a true freshman," said Smith. "She is one of our top shooters, but can also drive to the basket. She is able to score in a variety of ways for us and also gets it on the defensive end." Conference USA will announce its Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Sixth Player of the Year on Wednesday. 2008 All-Conference USA Women's Basketball Teams First Team
