Blazers Host Stetson To Open Season Friday

Nov. 13, 2008

UAB vs. Stetson Game Notes | Gametracker | Watch

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will open its 2008-09 regular-season schedule on Friday when it hosts the Stetson Hatters in a noon contest at Bartow Arena.

Friday will mark the second meeting between the two programs, with UAB winning the only previous meeting. The Blazers defeated Stetson, 72-58, on Dec. 15, 1984 in DeLand, Fla.

UAB is coming off a 74-45 win over Montevallo in an exhibition game last Saturday. The Blazers had four players score in double figures in the victory, led by senior guard Britney Jones with 17 and sophomore guard Amanda Peterson with 13.

Jones and Peterson are UAB's top returning scorers from a season ago, averaging 12.8 ppg and 8.5 ppg, respectively. The Blazers will also look to junior forward/center Amanda Scott for valuable minutes and experience after scoring 4.8 ppg and grabbing 3.3 rpg as a sophomore.

Stetson, which is under the direction of first-year head coach Lynn Bria, gained a 71-59 exhibition win over Saint Leo this past Saturday. In the victory, the Hatters were led by Jessica Conner and Jessica Bivins with 19 points each. Conner also garnered a double-double by adding 11 rebounds to her 19 points.

Senior guard Sharnesha Smith is Stetson's leading returning scorer with 9.4 ppg last season. Sophomore guard Tierra Brown returns after putting up 8.5 ppg as a freshman. Senior center Ayesha Barkley is the Hatters' biggest threat inside, averaging 7.4 points and 5.0 rebounds during the 2007-08 campaign.

Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT at Bartow Arena. The game can be followed live on Gametracker, as well as live audio and video on All-Access, by logging on to www.uabsports.com.
