Blazers Take On South Alabama In First Road Game Of The Season

UAB vs. South Alabama Game Notes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team will hit the road for the first time this season when it takes on South Alabama on Monday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT at The Mitchell Center in Mobile, Ala.

The Blazers started the season 1-0 when they picked up a 73-58 season-opening win over Stetson this past Friday.

In the victory over Stetson, UAB had four players score in double figures, led by senior guard Britney Jones with 22 points. Sophomore guard Amanda Peterson added 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for the first double-double of her career.

Also making large contributions to the Blazers' efforts were junior forward Tamika Dukes and junior guard Fatiha Salaam. Dukes scored 15 points against the Hatters, while also tallying eight rebounds and three steals. Salaam chipped in 12 points and five boards to start the season.

South Alabama also enters the contest with a 1-0 record after defeating Nicholls State, 83-30, to begin the '08-09 campaign last Friday.

Shakira Nettles paced the Jaguars in their season opener with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a trio of three-point baskets. Jessica Starling scored 14 points, while Vontrice Dennis added 12. Shaniece Brunner had 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds for South Alabama.

Monday will mark the 40th meeting between the two programs, with UAB holding a 26-13 lead in the all-time series. The Blazers won the last matchup with South Alabama, 70-61, on Jan. 2, 2006 in Bartow Arena. The last game between the two schools in Mobile resulted in a 62-42 Jaguar victory on Dec. 21, 2004.
