UAB Looks For Third Straight Win, Hosts Florida State Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball will be searching for its third consecutive win when it hosts the Florida State Seminoles Thursday at 7:00 p.m. CT in Bartow Arena. The Blazers are coming off a pair of victories over Delaware State and St. John's this past Monday and Tuesday on their way to capturing their fifth straight Blazer Invitational championship. Thursday will mark the 10th meeting between UAB and Florida State on the hardwood, with the Blazers holding a 5-4 advantage in the all-time series. The last meeting resulted in a 93-77 Seminole victory on Nov. 12, 2006 in Tallahassee, Fla. UAB is 4-7 on the year, including earning wins in its last two contests. The Blazers topped Delaware State, 50-39, Monday in the first round of the Blazer Invitational. UAB got its second win in two days by defeating St. John's, 80-71, Tuesday to claim the tournament championship for the fifth consecutive season. Senior guard/forward Diamond Rogers leads UAB and Conference USA in scoring with 17.9 ppg. Rogers also paces the Blazers in rebounds (6.9 rpg) and assists (3.8 apg). Senior Crystal McFadden, the MVP of the Blazer Invitational, is adding 12.8 ppg and 4.9 rpg to the Blazers' efforts, while shooting a team-best 42.9 percent from the field. Junior guard Britney Jones is the third Blazer averaging double-digits with 12.0 ppg.
Florida State, who is receiving votes in the latest Top 25 polls, boasts a 7-3 overall record. The Seminoles' most recent win was over Alabama State, 94-42, last Sunday. FSU has three players scoring in double figures, led by Tanae Davis-Cain with 13.7 ppg and followed closely by Mara Freshour with 13.0 ppg. Jacinta Moore is putting up 12.5 ppg, while also pacing the Seminoles on the boards with 6.0 rpg. Thursday's game will also feature a canned food and a warm clothing drive. Adult fans that bring in five canned food items, and youth fans that bring in three, will all receive free admission. Canned food items will be donated to the Magic City Food Bank, while warm clothing donations will be given to Jessie's Place. |
