April 3, 2007
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The UAB women's golf team shattered multiple school records in its victory at the Lady Eagle Classic, hosted by Southern Miss at Canebrake Country Club, with a three-round total of 899. 899 is the lowest 54-hole total in school history, with the previous record of 912 set in the fall of 2004. The Blazers also set a new 18-hole school record of 294 during the second round of competition, while also tallying a 596 through 36 holes, which is also a new UAB record. "This is a great way to go into the conference championships," said UAB head coach Kim Wilcox. "I knew they could do it, they just haven't been playing up to their potential until this tournament. They put it all together for three rounds and just played fantastic." UAB went into the third and final round of play in third place, sitting six strokes off of the lead and one stroke out of second. The Blazers shot a 303 during the final round to take the tournament title at 899 (+47). Middle Tennessee State finished in second place, just one stroke behind UAB at 900. West Florida, who led after two rounds of competition, shot a 314 during the third round to take the third spot at 904. Freshman Carolyn Cochran was UAB's top performer, carding a 220 through three rounds to finish in a tie for third place. Sophomore Alyson Mitchell, who shot a team-low 70 during round two, concluded the event just two strokes behind Cochran at 222, which tied her for the sixth position. Senior Jennifer Head tallied rounds of 75-74-77 to tie for 12th place at 226. Senior Martha Hudson tied for 19th place with a score of 231, while sophomore Christina Wentworth shot a 240 to tie for 27th.
UAB will be back in action when it hosts the Conference USA Women's Golf Championships on April 23-25 at the Limestone Springs Golf in Oneonta, Ala. |
