UAB To Host Conference USA Women's Golf Championship Beginning Monday

April 22, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's golf team will play host to the 2007 Conference USA Women's Golf Championship beginning Monday morning at Limestone Springs Golf Club in Oneonta, Ala. The event consists of three days, with one 18-hole round each day. The conference team and individual titles will be awarded on Wednesday immediately following the final round of play.

Conference USA schools that will be competing for the league title include East Carolina, Marshall, Memphis, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP.

C-USA boasts six squads that are listed in GolfWeek's top 100 women's collegiate teams, including SMU at No. 43 in the national rankings. The league also has three players that rank in the top 100 individually, including No. 58 Gerina Mendoza (UTEP), No. 59 Lacey Jones (SMU) and No. 100 Stacey Tate (Memphis).

This year marks the first time since 2001 that UAB has hosted the C-USA Women's Golf Championship, and just the second time overall. That previous time that the Blazers hosted the event, UAB finished seventh while Memphis went on to win the league crown.

The defending C-USA champion is East Carolina, who won the title in 2006 with a combined score of 887. ECU sophomore Lene Krog is the defending individual champion, winning the tournament last season as a freshman with a three-round total of 216.
