Blazers To Host Wright State, Samford In UAB Nike Classic
Sept. 11, 2008 UAB Nike Classic Game Notes | Gametracker BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team will return to the friendly confines of West Campus Field for a pair of home games this weekend. The Blazers are hosting their annual UAB Nike Classic, featuring opponents Wright State and Samford. UAB will begin the weekend with a Friday evening match against Wright State. Kickoff between the Blazers and the Raiders is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CT. Friday's game will mark the first meeting between UAB and the Raiders on the pitch. That will be followed by a Sunday matchup between UAB and cross-town foe Samford. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. CT. UAB (0-5) is led by junior forward Danya Barsalona with one goal on eight shots, including five shots on goal. Freshman midfielder/forward Laura McCalla has scored the Blazers' only other goal this year. The Raiders are 4-1 on the year and most-recently earned a 1-0 win at Eastern Illinois last Friday. Wright State is paced by Jess Rooma with 11 points this season, including a team-high four goals and three assists. Sara Palmero is close behind with three goals and two assists on the year. The matchup between UAB and Samford on Sunday will be the second meeting between the two programs in school history. The only previous meeting resulted in a 2-1 Samford victory in overtime a season ago. Samford enters the weekend 1-4 overall and 0-3 in away games. The Bulldogs are led by a trio of players with one goal each on the year, including Shannon Healy, Sarah Wilkinson and Cindy Spiker.
