Women's Tennis Cruises Past Southern Miss, 5-0
March 3, 2002
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The cold temperatures did not stop the UAB women's tennis team from taking its second win in three matches Sunday. The Blazers cruised to five singles wins in taking a 5-0 triumph at Southern Mississippi. UAB (2-5, 2-1 in Conference USA) took every match in straight sets and lost just seven combined games as a team. Leading the way for the Blazers was senior Monika Schmid at the No.1 slot. Taking her fifth decision in six outings, the German product swept USM's Shawny Price 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 2 spot, Natascha Immele took a 6-2, 6-0 decision, as did Femke deBoer in No. 4 singles. Blazer freshman Yvonne Ernst lost just three games en route to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jessica Olson, and Nadia Dellarciprete won by default. After the schools decided to play singles action first, doubles action did not take place because of the frigid weather. UAB will get to enjoy the home life Wednesday -- hosting in-state foe Jacksonville State in a 1:30 p.m. tilt at Brook Highland Racquet Club.
