Women's Tennis Falls to No. 35 South Alabama
March 15, 2002
MOBILE, Ala. - The UAB women's tennis team had a tough time Friday afternoon at South Alabama. But, if it is any comfort, the Blazers aren't the only ones. USA, ranked 35th nationally, continued its dominance at home with a 6-0 triumph over the Blazers at Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. The win was the Jags' 42nd consecutive at home, as the hosts dropped just one set in snapping a three-match win streak for UAB (4-6). The Jags cruised in double action, led by the No. 42 tandem of Josien Boverhof and Nienke Scheltens. The duo topped UAB's Monika Schmid and Femke deBoer 8-6. Katarina Palenikova and Silvia Sosnarova got by the Blazers' Natascha Immele and Sjouke Liem 8-3, while USA's Andrea Kurekova and Dominika Nemcovicova claimed an 8-1 victory over Yvonne Ernst and Nadia Dellarciprete . Dellarciprete got the Blazers' lone set win in singles play. Competing in the No. 6 slot, the sophomore took a 6-3 win in the opening frame before Nemcovicova won 6-2 in the second. The match was not completed, as the Jags took all of the other five singles matches while dropping a combined 16 games. UAB will try to get back to its winning ways Saturday morning, when it takes on Western Michigan in a 9 a.m. tilt in Mobile. No. 35 South Alabama 6 UAB 0
