April 29, 2002

CHICAGO, Ill. Ð UAB's Monika Schmid finished off a four-year career with UAB as one of the top players in the program as she was named All-Conference USA First Team as voted on by the league's 14 head coaches.

Being on the All-Conference team is nothing new to Schmid. In 200, she also earned First Team honors, while in 1999 and 2001, she was named to the C-USA Second Team.

The Siegsdorf, Germany product finished the 2002 season with a 14-6 dual-match record at the No. 1 spot, bringing her career total to 105-33. Thirteen of her wins came in straight sets and the only third-set tiebreaker she went to involved a dramatic 2-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) win over DePaul's Szilivia Kelemen at the C-USA Championship. The win lifted the seventh-seeded Blazers to a 4-3 upset over second-seeded DePaul.

Schmid finished the season with a 24-10 overall record, posting a 10-4 record in the fall. At the C-USA Fall Individual Tournament, the senior advanced to the finals, after defeating players such as First Team All-Conference Paty Aburto of TCU, Second Team All-Conference Jen Baccarani of Houston and Third Team All-Conference Rosa Perez of TCU.

In doubles, Schmid partnered with sophomore Femke DeBoer for a 14-5 dual-match record and 15-7 overall record. In April, the duo jumped into the Omni Hotel Collegiate Tennis Rankings at the No. 57 spot after taking an 8-4 win over Auburn's 28th-ranked Katia Illarionova and Carolina Maurer.

In previous years, Schmid partnered with UAB greats such as Mirela Vladulescu and Mary Anne Martin to go 90-23 in her career.

Joining Schmid on the First Team were Aburto, TCU's Katrin Gaber, DePaul's Szilvia Kelemen, Houston's Sarah Borwell and Tulane's Maria Ivanov. Borwell was named Player of the Year, while Ivanov earned Freshman of the Year honors. TCU's Roland Ingram earned Coach of the year.

Second Team All-Conference USA features Baccarani, Marquette's Gen Charron and Eva Trujillq, Memphis' Sabrina Lindemann, Tulane's Julie Morris and South Florida's Natalie Schwartz. TCU's Perez and Saber Pierce, Charlotte's Laura Swain, Marquette's Belle Espinosa and Monica Gonzales-Gordo of Memphis comprise the third team.

TCU led all Conference USA teams with four all-league selections, followed by Houston and Marquette with three each and Tulane and Memphis with two apiece.
