Collins Sets School Record As Blazers Take Second At Troy

TROY, Ala. --- The UAB track and field team took second place and sophomore Genoah Collins set a school record in the 800 meters on Saturday at the Coach O Invitational hosted by Troy University.

Collins, the UAB indoor record holder for the 800 meters, finished first in the 800-meter run and broke her own school record with a time of 2:11.38, earning 10 points for the Blazers. Collins set the previous school record of 2:11.96 in 2004. UAB had a total of 150 points on the day. Host Troy took first in the meet with 176 points.

The Blazers had a total of four first place finishes on the day. Sophomore Elizabeth Ambrus continued her own break-out season with a victory in the mile run. Ambrus ran a 5:17.56, while freshman Whitney Mays took second in the event with a time of 5:20.74. Sophomores Jennifer Thompson and Ryanne Fortney took fifth and sixth in the event and the four athletes competing in the mile earned UAB a total of 25 points.

The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Stacey Adewakun, Collins, freshman Tara Colvin and senior Adrienne Duke took first place with a time of 3:47.92. Sophomore Penny Shields was victorious in the triple jump with a mark of 11.58 meters.

The Blazers next head to Austin, Texas for the Texas Relays April 7-9.
