Mays Posts Third Place Finish, Qualifies For Region Meet
AUSTIN, Texas --- Whitney Mays, senior distance runner on the UAB track and field team, regionally qualified for the 3,000-meter steeplechase Friday at the 81st Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays.
Mays finished the race in third place with a time of 10:47.01 and qualified for the regional meet for the fourth time in her career. She joined Penny Shields (triple jump) as the second UAB athlete to qualify for the NCAA South Championships May 30-31 in Fayetteville, Ark. The Blazes' 4x800-meter squad finished eighth with a time of 3:45.24 qualifying them for the Saturday's finals. UAB had another strong performance in the 1600-meter sprint medley relay. The Blazers took sixth place with a time of 3:58.83. Earlier in the day, the 4x100-meter relay team ran to 29th-place finish in the preliminaries. The foursome completed the event in 47.82. Meanwhile senior Elizabeth Ambrus competed in the 10,000-meter run at the Stanford Invitational. The senior ran a 34:17.65, good for a 19th-place finish. The time was 10 seconds off the school record. Lisa Koll of Iowa State won the race with a time of 32:11.13. Samantha Hamilton and Erika Russ competed in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles at the Texas Relays. Hamilton took 42nd overall with her a time of 14.80, while Russ completed the event in 15.16 and finished in 55th place. Katrina Harrell recorded a 12.29 in the 100-meter dash to claim 48th place overall. The four-day meet comes to an end Saturday with the finals of several individual and relay events.
