Mays Wins 3000-Meter Steeplechase During Day One Of Vanderbilt Invite

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Whitney Mays highlighted the first day of the Vanderbilt Invitational for the UAB track & field team Friday by placing first in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:42.11. Mays won the race by more than nine seconds. Her winning time was a regional qualifying time, however, she has already previously qualified for the regional meet in the 3000-meter steeplechase this season. Also putting together a solid performance was freshman distance runner Stephanie Gammon, who finished third in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:12.07. In the lone sprint race of the day, the Blazers had a pair of runners in the top 20 in the 200-meter dash. Sophomore Katrina Harrell paced UAB and finished 15th overall with a time of 24.65. Senior Tara Colvin clocked a time of 24.72 to take 17th place. The second and final day of the Vanderbilt Invitational will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday with the women's hammer throw. The meet will conclude at approximately 3:30 p.m. with the 4x400 meter relay.
