Domingos Named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week

Aug. 27, 2007

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB outside hitter Fernanda Domingos has been named this week's Conference USA Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week. The senior Preseason All-Conference USA pick averaged 4.50 kills per game and hit a combined .447 in the team's two matches en route to the Music City/Magic City Invitational title.

"Fernanda had an outstanding weekend in Nashville and certainly deserves this recognition," said UAB head coach Kerry Messersmith. "She put up really impressive numbers this past weekend and to be honest, it wasn't just her, the whole team played great I thought. To hit better than .350 as a team for the weekend was a great way to start the season."

The Blazers swept preseason Atlantic Sun Conference favorite Belmont and host Lipscomb to claim their first tournament title of the season.

Domingos landed 16 kills on 26 attempts with only four errors for a solid .462 hitting percentage against Lipscomb. She also produced a .429 clip against Belmont with 11 kills on 21 attempts and only two miscues.

The Franca, Brazil native chipped in with four service aces and two block assists in six games played.

Joining Domingos as Conference USA honorees this week are Candice Davis of SMU, who is the league's Defensive Player of the Week, and Julia Silva of Tulsa, who garnered Setter of the Week accolades.

The Blazers are 2-0 on the year and will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to play Troy at 7 p.m.
