UAB's Gammon Receives Back-To-Back C-USA Weekly Honors
Sept. 16, 2008
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second time in as many weeks, UAB sophomore Stephanie Gammon has been named Conference USA's Cross Country Athlete of the Week. Gammon once again led the way for UAB at the Memphis Twilight, finishing 11th overall in a time of 18:39.04. The Blazers finished third in the field of 36, behind Arkansas and Kentucky. "This is another great accomplishment for a great young lady," said head coach Ray Stanfield. "Stephanie tangled with some of the best runners in the NCAA Saturday night at Memphis, including six All-Americans. She handled it great, especially for a sophomore." This is the second time in her career that Gammon has earned Athlete of the Week honors. The last Blazer to be named C-USA's Cross Country Athlete of the Week in back-to-back weeks was former standout Elizabeth Ambrus during the 2004 season. The cross country team returns to action on Oct. 4 at the Greater Louisville Classic in Kentucky. In the most recent U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association poll the Blazers were ranked 7th in the South Region behind Florida State, Florida, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Georgia.
